The Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) gave Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani the power to dissolve the federal cabinet on Friday.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, senator Jahangir Badar said that President Zardari, who chaired the CEC meeting, gave Prime Minister Gilani the power to dissolve the cabinet. The cabinet will be considered intact until the orders for its dissolution are given, he said.

Senator Badar said a new cabinet would be formed after the current one is dissolved. He added that the issue will be discussed with coalition partners.

Badar also said that the party’s cabinet ministers had handed in their resignations to the party, which may be used by the party when it is forming a new cabinet.

Earlier, The government decided to delay the planned cut in the size of the federal cabinet, which it intended to trim to a final size of just 16 to 12 members.

The decision to rightsize the cabinet is in line with the move to implement the 18th amendment.

The main opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) faction, has demanded a smaller cabinet as part of a 10-point economic agenda accepted by the PPP in early January. But the faction continues to oppose plans to impose a reformed general sales tax (RGST) – a key condition of the International Monetary Fund for continued financial aid.
