In the latest incident unidentified attackers riding motorcycles sprayed bullets across Sher Shah market, police said.
“The attackers came on motorcycles and started indiscriminate firing, at least 11 people have been killed and several others injured,” nisar , a police official, told local journalist.
Arif Razzaq, another police official, said the death toll may rise as some of the injured were in critical condition.
Doctors in two different hospitals also confirmed the toll.“We have received nine dead bodies,” Karrar Abbasi, a doctor at the Civil Hospital Karachi told .
A doctor at the nearby Abbasi hospital said his institution had received two corpses and five injured people.
Police said locals torched two vehicles “in the reaction” after the incident.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said those responsible for the violence were enemies of Pakistan and urged unity.
“All should sit together to resolve the issue and prepare a joint strategy to defeat the militant elements who are destroying the peace of Karachi,” the premier media office said Tuesday.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik Tuesday told the state run Pakistan television that the government has decided to take a hardline against those involved in the violence.
“We will take a strict action, there is no operation but there will be targeted raids and immediate action against those, who are involved. This action has to go forward,” he said.
